Full Description
During the excavation of three trial trenches at the site of the former St Augustine’s convent on the south side of Union St., a horizon containing occasional pieces of charcoal and post medieval finds was recorded. This sediment was seen to have built up against the park’s boundary wall (CHER 11034/1) at this location, the latter having produced evidence of being constructed in the medieval period. Prior to the construction of the convent, this part of Grosvenor Park was open, and used for gardening or cultivation (1). In Trench 2, several small cut features interpreted as postholes belonging to garden boundaries or structures were identified, and had fills containing post medieval pottery.
