Summary

This monument refers to a garden wall and gate, that was part of the Old Palace garden (CHER 11027). The wall is thought to date to the mid eighteenth century, while the gateway is thought to be from the beginning of the eighteenth. The wall is of coursed sandstone rubble and brown brick, the gate is wrought iron. It is thought that the wall may have been a free standing structure enclosing a terraced garden. At some point from the late 18th century the garden had been raised, essentially filling in the terraces to form a single level garden.

The wall is thought to date to the mid-eighteenth century, while the gateway is thought to be from the beginning of the nineteenth century. The wall is of coursed sandstone rubble and brown brick, the gate is wrought iron.

A blocked up doorway within the elevation of the retaining wall located on the east side of Souters Lane. Location of a stairway or possibly tunnel into the former palace.
