Full Description
A watching brief at rear of 25 Castle St., undertaken taken opportunistically between 1976 – 1977, where six foundation trenches of a new building were examined, revealed a thick deposit of disturbed, dark and organic sediment, containing residual Roman material (from CHER 8133), medieval and post medieval pottery (1).
It appears that during the medieval period, the site was used for refuse deposits, when the line of dwellings along Castle St. extended further to the west than it does now, and extensive ground disturbance occurred in post medieval times (1).
