Description

Watching brief carried out on minimal construction on St Mary's Hill to the rear of 25 Castle St. late in 1976 however in mid-February 1977 it was noticed that construction trenches would have more significant impact than previously thought and some excavation was carried out. Medieval evidence appears to suggest the site was in use primarily as a dumping ground although it almost certainly lay within the boundaries of properties fronting onto Castle St. Surfaces of probable Roman date was recorded at the southern end of the site. The lack of associated structural remains suggest they were external surfaces and may have been metalled road surfaces however they shared some similarity with the courtyard surfaces from Castle St. (ECH2823). Numerous finds of Roman pottery and tile were also recorded (1). External surfacings of Roman date recorded (2).
