Full Description
Archaeological investigations between Russell Street and City Road, on the site of the former Rylands Garage in 2004 identified evidence of medieval features in trench 1 of the excavations.
The evidence consisted of a medieval buried soil horizon present across much of the trench at a depth of 1.14m below present ground level, finds from the layer were broadly dated to the 13th to 14th century.
A series of medieval features were then recorded cutting this layer, comprising a series of small pits at the northern end of the trench [109; 105; 107] and a second sequence to the southeast [140; 110]. Some ceramic material and iron working waste was recovered from the fill of these pits suggestive of a possible iron working site nearby.
A linear gully [119] on a north-south alignment across the trench was also recorded containing a few sherds of pottery. (1)
