Full Description

Archaeological investigations at The Bars in 1998 recorded evidence of structural features of a post medieval date in trench 4 of the excavations fronting onto The Headlands.

The evidence consisted of a sandstone wall [408] running parallel to The Headlands and measuring 0.65m wide and surviving to a height of three courses (0.87m) including a possible foundation course. Some reconstruction may also have occurred with several upper courses of brick recorded above the sandstone.

To the north of the wall, a cobbled surface [409] was also identified measuring 2m in length and extending beyond the edge of the excavated area. (1)
