Full Description
Archaeological investigations at The Bars in 1998 recorded evidence of a timber lined pit or tank [213] in trench 1 of the excavations fronting onto Dee Lane.
The evidence consisted of a rectangular cut feature approximately 2.2-2.5m in length and 1.76-1.90m in width. The overall depth of the feature appeared to be 2.05m. The lower half of the feature was lined with timber, comprising four vertical corner posts, four cross rails and 27 planks. The lower fills of the pit included fruit stones and a single fragment of leather.
In addition, three pits [026; 044; 327] were also excavated in the same area of the trench, all of which appeared to have a primary fill of silty clay with some brick and coal fragments. One pit, [026] contained traces of what appeared to be carbonised wood. (1)
