Monument record 10939 - Possible medieval cellar at The Bars

Please read our .

Summary

Archaeological investigations at the Bars in 1990 consisted of limited excavations across a large site. A single test pit to the rear of the street frontage contained traces of substantial sandstone walls and a brick built floor that may represent a cellar structure. Two large blocks stood approximately 0.5m apart and may indicate an entrance. Although no dating evidence from the construction of the cellar was recorded, a single fragment of medieval roof tile was recovered from a deposit of black earth beneath the brick floor.
