Full Description
Archaeological investigations at 20 City Road in 2001 identified traces of possible kiln activity in several test pits. The evidence consisted of an east-west aligned linear feature [103] along the northern edge of test pit 7 and a depth of 0.74m below present ground level. The feature contained numerous fragments of over fired brick fragments that were interpreted by the excavator as forming a waste channel for a kiln. Unfortunately dating evidence was extremely limited with a single fragment of clay pipe stem recovered.
Additional evidence was recorded in test pit 8 approximately 9.5m to the north of test pit 7 where a second linear feature [114] on a north-south alignment was recorded. This feature consisted of a linear area of fire reddened brick sealed by a deposit of crushed brick fragments that were interpreted by the excavator as the back edge of a kiln structure. (1)
