Full Description
Archaeological investigations at 20 City Road in 2001 identified several features of a medieval or post medieval date in test pit 4. The test pit was unfortunately abandoned due to possible contamination before the features could be investigated in sufficient detail. The evidence consisted of two phases of construction for an east-west aligned sandstone wall [4] surviving to a height of three courses and an associated area of sandstone flagged floor [8]. Although dating was limited, it was suggested by the excavator that the original wall may have been of late medieval date with a possible rebuild in the 17th-18th century.
Test pit 5 also recorded evidence of a possible cess or rubbish pit [73] containing pottery of a 17th-18th century date. (1)
