Full Description
Archaeological investigations at 20 City Road in 2001 identified traces of late medieval evidence including two walls and buried soil horizons probably relating to activity to the rear of properties on Foregate Street.
The evidence consists of a Tudor brick wall [44] recorded in the east facing section of Test Pit 1 on a north-east to south-west alignment surviving to a height of four courses. A second wall of a possibly similar date [45] was also recorded on a north-south alignment. The second wall was of sandstone blocks and was identified for a length of 1.2m. It was interpreted as a possible boundary wall. A possible continuation of this wall was identified in an aborted test pit (test pit 2) to the south. The wall [2] was recorded at a depth of 0.35m below present ground level and consisted of two courses of sandstone blocks of a similar construction to wall 45.
A further section of this wall may also have been identified in test pit 5 to the north of test pit 1. This wall [76] consisted of a north south aligned sandstone wall in the north facing section of the test pit. The upper courses of the wall appear to have been robbed out. A soil horizon at the base of the test pit [47] contained fragments of medieval and disturbed Roman pottery. (1)
