Full Description
Archaeological investigations carried out during the redevelopment of The Bars site, Boughton involved the demolition of the former Vickers Armstrong motor engineering works including the remains of several air raid shelters. The shelters comprised well fired red brick fronted with a concrete wall core with extensive re-inforcing. Elements of the re-inforcing rods extended into the roof of the buildings twhich were also made up of re-inforced poured concrete and overlain by corrugated iron.
Documentary research had indicated that the engineering works had been used during the war for the production of Wellington Bombers and as a result several well constructed air raid shelters were identified close to the Steam Mill Street side of the site. (1)
