Archaeological investigations at the site of the present Northgate Roundabout in 1983-84 identified quantities of post medieval ceramic material. The modern pottery includes fragments of 18th-19th century black glazed storage vessels and a body sherd of a sugarloaf mould, together with a group of 19th century clay tobacco pipe bowls (1).
