Summary

The Chester to Shrewsbury line was incorporated in 1845 by Act of Parliament and opened in 1846 between Saltney and Ruabon. It ran via Ruabon, Wrexham and Gobowen and met the Chester to Holyhead line at the Saltney Junction, from there into the city, the two lines shared the track. It was also known as the North Wales Mineral Railway and the Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Chester Junction Railway. In 1854 it became part of the Great Western Railway. There were several sidings along the main line providing access to industrial sites including the wharves and factories at Saltney and the Dee wharves as well as sidings to mining industries in North Wales.
