Full Description
In 1761 a column was placed in the centre of Abbey Square that had been removed from the Exchange in 1756 when the open ground floor was enclosed (1). At some point it acquired a cross on its top, and although it is not clear when this occurred, the listing for the structure states that it is likely nineteenth century, 'possibly on an earlier base' and notes that 'the shaft is reputed previously to have been a column of the City Exchange (DCH6730) (1, 2).
