Full Description
Historical documents relating to the post medieval developments that occurred in Abbey Square (or Abbey Court), describe the mid-seventeenth condition of this area as being ‘base, little, noisome and unfit for habitation’ in the opinion of Bishop Bridgeman (1). One cause of this condition was reported as rowdiness associated with an alehouse in the abbey gate (1). No other information on this potential monument is available, and it should be noted that later mapping (from 1871-3 town plan) shows an inn, not in the Abbey Gate, but to the north of it (CHER 10689) (1).
