Full Description

In 1971, the north end of the terrace of shops and flats on the east side of Northgate St, just to the south of Little Abbey Gateway, was demolished, offering an opportunity to investigate this area archaeologically (1). In the west part of the site was a worn medieval sandstone cobbled surface (CHER 10664), in addition to postholes and a gully (CHER 10665), and a substantial cess pit (this monument).

To the east side of the excavation area and east of the cobbled surface was a vast cess pit, the edges of which were outside the limits of the excavation. The available draft report does not indicate if any finds were associated with the pit, but asserts that it is medieval in date (1, 2, 3).
