Summary

Four cottages built on the site of the former monastic kitchen (CHER 10640/9), in the seventeenth century, of which two cottages survive. Bishop Bridgeman, who in 1623 condemned the prebendaries houses as ‘base, little, noisome and unfit for habitation’, initiated improvements. In 1626 on the site of the monastic kitchen he built four houses, reserved for the cathedral conducts, they were to be maintained by the dean and the chapter.

Full Description

This monument refers to four cottages built on the site of the former monastic kitchen (CHER 10640/9), in the seventeenth century, of which two cottages survive (see listed building records DCH6726, DCH6725). Bishop Bridgeman, who in 1623 condemned the prebendaries houses as ‘base, little, noisome and unfit for habitation’, initiated improvements. In 1626 on the site of the monastic kitchen he built four houses, reserved for the cathedral conducts, they were to be maintained by the dean and the chapter (1, 2, 6).
