Full Description

In 1755 Charles Boswell acquired a lease (in addition to one held for the north side of Abbey Square) at the south end of the cathedral precinct immediately west of St Nicholas’ Chapel, by then a wool hall, on which he built a linen hall (3). This Lining Hall is also depicted on Lavaux’s 1745 plan of the city, and an 1854 illustration by Romney depicts a low wall extending southwards from the south transept and a small building on the west side of the wall. Note that recent excavations in this specific area (ECH5204, Trench 2) identified eighteenth century surfaces which may be related to this hall (1, 2).
