Full Description

Archaeological investigations in Chester during the installation of CCTV trenches along the main streets identified a mid seventeenth to early eighteenth century soil layer close to the surface on the eastern side of Northgate St (CHER 10223) and the northern side of St Werburgh St. in close proximity to the Cathedral (this monument) (1).

Although the excavators stated that the two areas share the same stratigraphic sequence, the distance between the two trenches requires that this area is considered a separate monument. Coal fragments, charcoal, but no other finds were recovered from this area (1).
