Full Description
Archaeological investigations to the south of Chester Cathedral in 2011 recorded a series of Roman to post medieval horizons, to the south of the Cathedral adjacent to St Werburgh St. (1, 2). Some medieval material was recovered, but all derived from either post medieval burial fills or from other later disturbed deposits. A total of twenty four pottery fragments were recovered, including some French imports from the Saintonge, dating to between the twelfth to fourteenth or fifteenth century (2). Decorative medieval floor tile of ecclesiastical origin was also recovered. All tiles appear to be square or triangular. All tiles had signs of extreme wear, possibly representing rebuilding occurring in the abbey. They appear to be consistent with fourteenth century tiles (2). One green-glazed rood tile was also recovered (1).
