Summary

A road surface dating to the later post medieval period was identified in the area known locally as the 'Werburgh Street Dip'. Overlying a layer of sand containing eighteenth century pottery in Trench 3 was a layer of sandstone blocks. The excavators concluded that the blocks may have formed a substantial sub-base for a road surface.

Full Description

During excavations in St Werburgh Street in 2012, in the area known locally as the 'Werburgh Street Dip', a road surface dating to the later post medieval period was identified (1). Overlying a layer of sand containing eighteenth century pottery in Trench 3 was a layer of sandstone blocks. The excavators concluded that the blocks may have formed a substantial sub-base for a road surface, as they report similar foundation materials have been recorded elsewhere in the city (1).
