Full Description
During excavations in St Werburgh Street in 2012, in the area known locally as the 'Werburgh Street Dip', structural remains dating to the later post medieval period were identified (1). The remains were comprised of a sandstone wall footing with potential placing for a column. These footings post-dated a layer of sand that contained eighteenth century pottery.
The foundation was aligned north-east to south-west (broadly parallel to the road), and was traced for the length of the trench. In one particular location the mortar exhibited a roughly circular impression around a block of sandstone that stood proud of the surrounding masonry, the whole giving the impression that a column or similar upright may have been located there (1). Immediately west of the wall foundation was a subterranean chambered feature measuring 0.5 by 0.5m, that may have been a soakaway pit. It was assumed to have been contemporary with the wall foundation (1).
