Full Description
No 22 Watergate Street consists of an undercroft, now used as a shop, of probable 14th century date. It is approximately 6m wide and around 14.6m in length with an interior floor level of around 0.60m below the present street level. The undercroft was divided into two rooms, the back room measured approximately 3.40m in length and was constructed of brick and was probably of 19th century.
The west wall of the undercroft contains a formerly 4-bay structure of two Samson posts carrying a damaged bridging joist of large scantling. The front post, partly cut away, has a damaged jetty-bracket towards the Row. The front room occupies the full width of the property and is around 10m in length and is mainly built of brick with evidence of some stonework at ground level. The present street frontage suggests encroachment onto the street of around 0.80m.
A number of timber samples were taken for dendro-chronological analysis however the results proved inconclusive. (1)
