Full Description

Archaeological investigations carried out along Water Tower Street in 1998 revealed evidence of a substantial post medieval brick building (4). At the eastern end of the trench, was a substantial sandstone wall foundation 0.6m thick, with a single course of brick surviving on it, the whole being 1.2m high, surviving to a length of at least 2.4m. It appeared to represent a substantial brick building constructed in the eighteenth or nineteenth century on a slightly different alignment to, and earlier than, the layout of the modern road. It is not apparent on the maps that were consulted prior to the begining of the watching brief (4). Please note, however, that a building at the east end of the modern street does appear on the mid-nineteenth century town plan of Chester, but that no trench location plan for this watching brief is available.
