Summary

Archaeological investigations carried out along Water Tower Street in 1998 encountered evidence of a sandstone rubble deposit of medieval or later date, thought to represent the demolition rubble of Roman or medieval structures. Variable in thickness, up to a maximum of 0.7m, it was comprised of sometimes large sandstone blocks, some worked pieces and some with mortar adhering, but no soil matrix. Smaller blocks and crushed sandstone was also occasionally found.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations carried out along Water Tower Street in 1998 encountered evidence of a sandstone rubble deposit of medieval or later date, thought to represent the demolition rubble of Roman or medieval structures (1, 4). Variable in thickness, up to a maximum of 0.7m, it was comprised of sometimes large sandstone blocks, some worked pieces and some with mortar adhering, but no soil matrix. Smaller blocks and crushed sandstone was also occasionally found (4).
