Summary

During archaeological excavations at Watergate House in 1959, a layer of so-called 'dark earth' and robber trenches for removing the stone of former Roman buildings were recorded. The layer of rubble and 'dark soil' was assumed to have accumulated in the early post-Roman period, since the robber trenches above the Roman walls cut through it.

Full Description

During archaeological excavations at Watergate House in 1959, a layer of so-called 'dark earth' and robber trenches for removing the stone of former Roman buildings were recorded (1). The layer of rubble and 'dark soil' was assumed to have accumulated in the early post-Roman period, since the robber trenches above the Roman walls cut through it. No Saxon period material, however, was reported.
