Full Description

Archaeological investigations along the footpath at Bridge Street identified a number of features of medieval date. Two areas of investigation were carried out beneath the footpath in front of the Rows between 49-55 Bridge Street East and 46-54 Bridge Street west.
To the east, a sandstone cellar [context 208] was recorded beneath No 49 Bridge Street. The cellar was recorded underlying 19th century brick work and consisted of a sandstone masonry wall probably belonging to the south-west corner of a cellar or undercroft.

Evidence of another cellar was recorded beneath the adjacent property at No 51 Bridge Street and consisted of a partially exposed section of brick work. Like the western side of the street, a brick culvert was also identified encountered beneath the kerbstones however it was not investigated. (1)
