Full Description
Archaeological investigations along the footpath at Bridge Street identified a number of features of post medieval date. Two areas of investigation were carried out beneath the footpath in front of the Rows between 49-55 Bridge Street East and 46-54 Bridge Street west.
A linear construction trench [context 119] was identified during excavations along the western side of the street. The trench extended east from the existing shop frontage for an average distance of 0.35m and contained a backfill of soil and mortar.
This feature is tentatively interpreted as a construction trench for the foundations and associated structural elements of an earlier shop frontage. In addition, the west edge of a brick culvert on a north-west to south-east alignment was also encountered beneath the kerbstones however it was not investigated. (1)
