Full Description
A series of medieval and post medieval deposits were recorded during archaeological investigations at Hamilton House in 2006. The evidence consisted of an accumulation of soil in the early post medieval period (CHER 10247/1) followed by later structural evidence (CHER 10247/2).
Two successive soil layers subsequently covered the earlier medieval structural evidence (CHER 10246) containing pottery of a 15th-16th century date. This was then cut by a number of post medieval features.
This was followed by the post medieval structural evidence consisting of a cobbled surface [context 18] possibly representing a path or yard, a linear feature [context 9] on an east west alignment interpreted as a former property boundary and two phases of wall construction on a similar east west alignment. Both walls were constructed using sandstone footings and may represent a later replacement of the boundary ditch with a more substantial feature.
