Full Description

Evidence of medieval activity was recorded during archaeological investigations to the rear of 10 Commonhall Street. The investigations comprised an initial phase of evaluation consisting of a single trench in 2006 followed by later investigations in 2010 consisting of archaeological excavation and a subsequent watching brief. The evidence indicates pitting activity in the medieval period (CHER 10241) and early post medieval period (CHER 10242) followed by structural activity from the 17th century onwards (CHER 10260; 10261).

Medieval activity was encountered at the base of the excavated trench in 2010 with only minimal investigation required as it lay beyond the final depth of disturbance associated with the development. The evidence consisted of a circular pit [context 45] sealed by a soil layer possibly indicating a garden soil. The fill of the pit contained charcoal flecks and mortar as well as medieval and earlier pottery. (1)

Traces of an earlier medieval pit were recorded during the evaluation in 2006 but not extensively excavated at the time (2)
