Full Description
Archaeological investigations in Commonhall Street in 1991 identified wall features in trenches 2 and 3 interpreted as a post medieval cellar that likely removed a large amount of the upper levels of the archaeology.
The wall identified in trial hole 2 appeared to contain construction of several different periods, perhaps suggesting several phases of rebuilding. The foundations of the wall were dated to the start of the 18th century and may relate to a structure recorded on 19th century maps in that location.
Underlying the wall, the excavators recorded traces of a second structure (Feature 8) tentatively interpreted as a late medieval or early post medieval sandstone cellar, it clearly cut the underlying Roman feature (CHER 8440) (1)
