Summary

Archaeological investigations in the north east corner of Goss Street recorded evidence of medieval and post medieval structural activity. The site, excavated by J.C. McPeake of the Grosvenor Museum, was located in the northern area of the Astons site and was previously partially excavated in 1948 by Webster and Richmond. At some point in the 17th century the Tudor structure was either replaced or heavily altered with evidence of a substantial brick built structure occupying the site by 1680. The evidence for this structure comprised a brick built cellar dated to around 1680 and a superstructure later extended over an area of 9.5m by 3m with a cobbled back yard and several out buildings. Material recovered from several pits suggest the site was used as a public house.
