Monument record 10156 - Tudor house at Goss Street

Archaeological investigations in the north east corner of Goss Street recorded evidence of medieval and post medieval structural activity. The site, excavated by J.C. McPeake of the Grosvenor Museum, was located in the northern area of the Astons site and was previously partially excavated in 1948 by Webster and Richmond.

Following the demolition of the medieval half timber building, a Tudor half timber building on a stone superstructure was recorded. The evidence for this building was fragmentary however and it was unclear whether this was one building or two. The northern interior room contained a sandstone paved floor while a hearth was recorded in the southern room or area. (1)

The evidence indicated that the 16th century building, or buildings, subsequently burnt down. (7)
