Monument record 10351 - Wine Vaults, Constructed from Part of Franciscan Friary, West Side Stanley Street

During the construction of a cellar (CHER 10352) some time after the land was sold to Mr Hasketh in 1750 on the west side of Stanley St. (the precise location is unknown), he demolished a series of wine vaults (this monument) that had been constructed from parts of the former Grey Friars complex (1).

During the excavation of the new cellar, medieval tiles, which were thought to have been portions of the flooring of a church (CHER 10318/2/1) and in addition, 'buried bodies [CHER 10318/6] were dug up'. Contra Watkins (Roman Cheshire, p154), the location of Mr Hesketh's property is not related to the location of the church of St Chad (1). Again, the precise location of this event is unclear, although the monuments' GIS point has been placed where the west end of the Franciscan Friars Church (CHER 10318/2) is thought to have been, which is also just on the west side of Stanley St.
