Full Description
Several fragments of medieval decorated floor tile was recovered during archaeological investigations at the site of the Telephone Exchange on St John Street in 1938. The tile was recovered as residual deposits from later, 17th century pits.
Two examples were recovered with the same pattern, fairly common in Chester they were covered with an olive brown glaze. A single example of tile with yellow slip was recovered. These three tiles were patterned rather than showing images. A final tile of an early 14th century date was an unusual find - so far the only one of its kind in Chester - and depicted a stag and a possible park pale in the background. (1)
