Description

St John Street, 1938: excavations on the site of the new Telephone Exchange in St John Street in 1938, following the demolition of the former buildings there in 1937 (2), revealed a layer of sand and fragments of sandstone. This may have formed the foundations of a roadway leading to the main entrance of the amphitheatre. Finds include Samian and coarse ware of the last quarter of first century and early second century, three fragments of glass vessels and pieces of opus signinum flooring (1).
