Full Description
<1> Earthworks Archaeological Services, 2001, Proposed Development at Bollands Court, Chester, R2349 (Client Report). SCH3908.
Archaeological investigations to the west of Bolland’s Court in 2001 recorded traces of a possible Roman structure. The evidence comprised a single sandstone rubble wall bonded with a hard mortar [Context 60] uncovered in trench 8 of the investigation at a depth of 240mm below present ground level. The mortar appeared similar to opus signinum however no dating evidence was recovered from the site.
<2> Gifford and Partners, 2003, Bolland's Court, Chester. Report on an Archaeological Evaluation (Client Report). SCH7650.
Three evaluation trenches were excavated in 2003. Late Roman activity was evidenced in trenches II and III which implies that domestic occupaion and Iron working were present in the vicinity
