Summary

A Roman surface was encountered during archaeological observations near Pemberton's Parlour in 1998. An intact pillar from a Roman hypocaust was also noted during the work.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations carried out along Water Tower Street in 1998 encountered evidence of a soil deposit overlying the natural containing several fragments of Roman pottery.

Later deposits recorded along the length of the road included fragments of re-used Roman stone as well as an intact Roman pila, although this discovery was not monitored. (1)
