Full Description
In the late eleventh century (and so it was probably in existence earlier than this), the space outside St Peter's Church near the cross was referred to as 'de mercato, de foro', phrases that suggest it adjoined the marketplace (1). Later medieval references situate the market place to the south of St Werburgh's and to the east of St Peter's (1). Note that exterior surfaces, suggested to have been part of this market area during the Saxon period, were recorded during the 1991 excavations at the corner of Northgate St. and Eastgate St. (CHER 9057) (1).
