Full Description
During test excavations at Commonhall Village, off Bridge St. in 1991, a Saxon period hearth, cut into Roman remains, was recorded (1). Cutting a Roman wall was a clay hearth, showing evidence of burning and containing an amount of Saxon pottery in its charcoal and ash-rich fill (1). This hearth sealed the demolition layer of the Roman buildings at this location (CHER 8179).
