Summary

During test excavations at Commonhall Village, off Bridge St. in 1991, a Saxon period hearth, cut into Roman remains, was recorded. The hearth sealed the late Roman demolition layer also identified at this location.

Full Description

During test excavations at Commonhall Village, off Bridge St. in 1991, a Saxon period hearth, cut into Roman remains, was recorded (1). Cutting a Roman wall was a clay hearth, showing evidence of burning and containing an amount of Saxon pottery in its charcoal and ash-rich fill (1). This hearth sealed the demolition layer of the Roman buildings at this location (CHER 8179).
