Full Description
Post-dating the earliest of a series of stone robbing trenches identified in Trench IX of the 2000 excavations at the amphitheatre (CHER 9042, ECH4299), but pre-dating two later trenches, was a midden deposited in the space between the outer walls of Amphitheatre 1 and 2 (the 'concentric' wall of Amphitheatre 1 had been robbed out first) (1). Formed when large parts of the amphitheatre were still standing, as it overlay a ruined part of the building, but was cut by later robber trenches over the former walls of Amphitheatre 2's minor entrance 4 (1). All Saxon period finds recovered from this excavation were derived from these deposits.
