Full Description

Excavations by Prof Newstead and Droop to the south of Princess Street in 1939 encountered traces of metal working waste at Site A. The waste was recorded just to the north west of a pillar base and overlying a surface of compacted cobblestones on or near the site of the barrack type block (CHER 8404) adjacent to the elliptical building. (1)

The finds recovered from the site were primarily of a late first to second century date and included small quantities of pottery as well as waste produced as a by product of the metal working process (i.e. ceramic crucibles, slag and charcoal) as well as fragments of bronze studs, ingots and sheet.
