Summary

A thin layer of demolition layer overlay the Roman elliptical building baths comprising areas of soot and charcoal over the site sometime in the early fifth century.

Full Description

Evidence from the site of the Elliptical building indicate its demolition in the early part of the fifth century with a 0.15m thick layer of soot overlying the hypocaust floor of the bath structure indicating a period of abandonment lasting at least several years while further to the west, investigations in 1994 recorded a substantial collapse layer belonging to the perimeter wall of the insula was recorded overlying the Roman street surfaces.
