Full Description

A Roman road on a north-south alignment was recovered to the east of the north end of a barrack block of the First Cohort during archaeological investigations at Crook Street in 1973. (1)

The road surface comprised metalled sandstone with the eaves drip channel of the barrack veranda to the west. Several street surfaces were identified throughout the Roman period including at least one re-surfacing during the timber period of construction. Following the reconstruction of the buildings in stone the road was repaved in stone with the addition of a well built sandstone gutter comprising closely fitted sandstone blocks into which a channel had been carved. A new road surface was also laid down comprised broken sandstone brash and roof tile fragments. (1)
