Summary

A Roman surface was recorded at Princess Street between a barrack building and a centurion's house. The surface was encountered during archaeological investigations between 1963 and 1965 by Mr Petch from the Grosvenor Museum, sadly, however, the work has never been published due to financial constraints at the time and the available resource is limited to trench plans and the site archive

Full Description

A substantial area of the city was subject to archaeological investigations between 1963 and 1965 involving an area to the rear of the plots on Watergate Street, Northgate Street, Weaver Street and Hunter Street. A series of 24 trenches were investigated in all under the auspices of Mr Petch from the Grosvenor Museum, sadly however the work has never been published due to financial constraints at the time and the available resource is limited to trench plans and the site archive.

Traces of a possible surface was encountered between a barrack block to the east (CHER 8324) and a centurion’s house to the west (CHER 8325) in trench 13 of the excavations at Princess Street. A short section of a metalled surface was encountered (1)
