Full Description
A substantial area of the city was subject to archaeological investigations between 1963 and 1965 involving an area to the rear of the plots on Watergate Street and Northgate Street. A series of 24 trenches were investigated in all under the auspices of Mr Petch from the Grosvenor Museum, sadly however the work has never been published due to financial constraints at the time and the available resource is limited to trench plans and the site archive.
Evidence of an east-west aligned structure was recorded just to the south of Princess Street at the northern end of the site in trenches 13, 16-20 and 23. The evidence indicated by the trench plans would suggest a barrack building facing north. Structural evidence of the southern external wall on an east-west alignment in trenches 16, 19 and 20 with two internal partition walls extending north from its in trenches 16 and 19. Trench 17 immediately to the north recorded further evidence of internal partition walls. The north external wall was located in trenches 18 and 23 while the west external wall was encountered in trench 13. Traces of a veranda surface and possible post pit was also encountered in trench 18. (1)
