Full Description
Evidence of a late Roman or post-Roman surface was recorded during archaeological investigations at Hamilton Place in 1992 (1). Traces of a layer at the base of Trench 2, approximately 0.90m below current ground level, containing what was thought to be residual Roman pottery and tile was interpreted as a possible cultivation or so-called 'dark earth' layer. This horizon overlay evidence of Roman structures at this location, and was sealed by mixed post medieval deposits. Note that this horizon was not extensively investigated (1).
