Monument record 8269 - Roman mortar layer at the Town Hall

Please read our .

Summary

Evidence of a possible Roman layer of mortar was recorded during small scale archaeological investigations at the Town Hall. Although not fully excavated the layer may represent a foundation level for a Roman structure. The location of these excavations within the fortress would suggest this feature relates to the substantial masonry building located at the heart of the fortress, suggested to be a hospital or infirmary.
