Summary

During excavations at the Telephone Exchange in St John St. between 1970 and 1971, a series of Roman features were recorded. This monument refers to the earliest of these features, a pit 'of considerable size' recorded at the western end of Trench C, the primary fill of which contained a fragment of an early Drag 37 bowl in addition to sherds of Holt fabric.

Full Description

During excavations at the Telephone Exchange in St John St. between 1970 and 1971 (3), a series of Roman features were recorded. This monument refers to the earliest of these features, a pit 'of considerable size' recorded at the western end of Trench C, the primary fill of which contained a fragment of an early Drag 37 bowl in addition to sherds of Holt fabric (3). Several other, seemingly later features were recorded in Trench D (CHER 8521), as was a spread of sandstone that may indicate stone working activities (CHER 8522).
